In this series of three lectures given at George Whitefield College in May 2014, Canon Charles Raven explores the state of the contemporary Anglicanism, looking back at developments over the last 20 years. In his second lecture, he focuses on Archbishop Rowan Williams’ ‘shadow gospel’, in which he presents two opposing positions and then advocates a middle way. Charles Raven contrasts Archbishop Williams with one of his predecessors, Thomas Cranmer, finding that whilst the latter thought the Bible was clear and the church may be in error, the former tends to the opposite opinion. This inevitably leads to a side-lining of the truth of Scripture and accommodation to a secular culture.
